Brianna Wolf of Bourbonnais, Illinois, one of four Olivet students to receive prestigious NURSE Corps Scholarship

2015 Apr 27

Bourbonnais resident Brianna Wolf is one of four students in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Olivet Nazarene University to receive the prestigious 2014 NURSE Corps Scholarship, awarded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The four scholarship recipients from Olivet are:

  • Larina Branch, graduate student, Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner program, Lansing, Illinois
  • Margaret Luckenbill, graduate student, Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner program, Bethany, Illinois
  • Kendra Vansant, graduate student, Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner program, Champaign, Illinois
  • Brianna Wolf, senior, nursing major, Bourbonnais, Illinois

These students received the NURSE Corps Scholarship for their commitment to primary care. The scholarship enables these students to receive funding for tuition, fees and other educational costs in exchange for working at an eligible critical shortage facility for at least two years after graduation. They will earn the same competitive salary and benefits as any new hire.

"We are proud of these Olivet students and their willingness to use their skills and education in service to the underserved," said Dr. Linda Davison, dean of Olivet's School of Nursing and Health Sciences. "Their dedication to nursing is demonstrated by their commitment to being part of the NURSE Corps program."

For fiscal year 2014, HRSA received a total of 2,467 applications from students at more than 700 schools. Olivet ranked among the top 20 schools for number of students receiving these scholarships. Less than 10 percent of the applicants received the scholarship. The application process is highly competitive, and those applying must fulfill several requirements, including professional reference letters, transcripts, resume and an essay.

"After graduation, I'll be studying for my family nurse practitioner board exams," said Larina Branch, one of the scholarship recipients. "When I'm licensed, I plan to get out there and focus on patient care. I want to care for my patients and see the difference I'm making in their lives."

NURSE Corps gives nurses nationwide the opportunity to turn their passion for service into a lifelong career. Committed to building healthier communities in urban, rural and frontier areas, this organization supports nursing and nursing students as they work in communities with inadequate access to care. The NURSE Corps Scholarship Program has helped critical shortage facilities meet their urgent need for nurses since 2002 and helped more than 2,200 dedicated nurses provide quality care where they are needed most.
