Holly Risinger of Tremont, Illinois, competes as member of Olivet's award-winning SHRM team

2017 May 1

Holly Risinger, a resident of Tremont, Illinois, is a member of the Olivet Nazarene University Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapter's competition team for 2016-2017. She is a senior majoring in business management at Olivet.

Olivet's team won the 2017 Division I Case Competition at the recent Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Student Case Competition and Career Summit - East in Philadelphia. This major SHRM award competition centers on developing effective solutions to business problems and is open to human resource (HR) students. Olivet teams have also done well in these competitions previously, placing second in 2015 and fifth in 2016.

In the April 2017 competition, 30 teams - comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from schools across the United States - competed. Runner-up in Division I was the University of Toledo. West Virginia University won the Division II title with East Carolina University taking second place. Other participating schools include Pennsylvania State University, Ball State University, Rutgers, Texas A&M, University of Tennessee, West Virginia University, Quinnipiac University, Temple University, Baldwin Wallace University and James Madison University.

During the competition, each team analyzed and solved a business case by preparing a written executive summary and 15-minute oral presentation. This required integrated HR thinking, ethical decision-making, and strong communication and presentation skills. A panel of certified SHRM members judged preliminary and final oral presentation rounds onsite.

Olivet's School of Business sponsors a Student Chapter of SHRM. The club hosts multiple events each year to provide HR-related opportunities to fellow students, is active in local and region HR chapters, and participates in the SHRM Case Competition. Faculty sponsors are Professor Andy Corbus and Professor Faith Newman.
