Student spotlight: Alexis Smith of Bourbonnais, Illinois, Olivet's Class of 2017

2017 May 4

Alexis Smith of Bourbonnais, Illinois is a member of the Class of 2017 at Olivet Nazarene University. Her major is public relations (PR) and strategic communication. She came to Olivet as a transfer student in her sophomore year. Now, she is one of the first four graduates in the Department of Communication's newest major. While at Olivet, she was named to the dean's list and was the director of Inspired Strategies Agency, Olivet's student-run public relations agency serving real-world clients; vice president of Green Room student theatre club; and assistant director for "Guys and Dolls," the 2017 spring musical.

What are your plans for after graduation?

This summer, I will be doing PR and marketing for a theatre education project, "The Lion King Jr.," at Bradley-Bourbonnais High School. I will also be appearing in Limelight Theatre Company's production of "Peter and the Starcatcher."

I'm planning to move to St. Augustine, Florida, in August and to work in community theatre and possibly PR there. My dream is to do PR for a theatre company.

The future holds many possibilities. I'm open to new experiences. I'd like to live in Los Angeles or New York City eventually.

What is a favorite Olivet memory for you?

Last summer, I took a Meisner? acting technique class with Professor Jerry Cohagan. It was the most excruciating experience of vulnerability that I've ever gone through, and it has made me a better actor.

What has surprised you most about your time at Olivet?

I discovered a level of professionalism at Olivet that I'd never experienced before. During my time here, I've learned how to be a professional. I've had great mentors, people who want to help me succeed.

Is there an Olivet professor who has made a lasting impact on your life?

Professor Elizabeth Kerns in the Department of Communication. She mentored me and helped me out when I needed it. I've never had an adult invest in me to the degree that she has. She believes in me, is my cheerleader, pushes and challenges me. She is helping me become the best person I can be.

What is one important thing you've learned at Olivet that you'll carry with you into the rest of your life?

To know what I bring to the table and to not let anyone tell me otherwise. I liked how we spent time learning about our personality and strengths. Now I understand better who I am and how I work. I know who I am separate from my parents and friends. I can bring that to every situation I'm in.

Where would you like to be in five years?

I want to feel like that whatever I'm doing is making an impact on the world and making the world a better place. We're put here to leave this earth a better place than it was when we were born.

What would you like to say to students who are considering Olivet for college?

If you want a college experience where you can become the professional you are meant to be, then come to Olivet. You will learn how to be a professional here.
