Olivet Nazarene University announces new major in earth and space science

Bourbonnais, IL (02/15/2019) — Earth and space science is now a major offered by the Department of Chemistry and Geosciences in the College of Arts and Sciences at Olivet Nazarene University. Enrollment is now open for fall 2019 to students who want to enter this newly structured discipline.

"As science becomes more integrated into our daily lives, we need science professionals both inside and outside of the laboratory and classrooms," said Dr. Stephen Case, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Geosciences. "We need professionals who can communicate science, who can understand the interaction between science and society, who can help legislate science-informed policy, and who can speak with wisdom about the interactions between science and faith."

Students who choose Olivet's earth and space science major will gain an interdisciplinary foundation in the sciences. They will also receive unique training for employment in the planetarium community. Olivet is one of only a handful of Christian universities across the country with a planetarium on campus. Built in 1967 and renovated in 2008, Strickler Planetarium has a projector system that ranks as one of the top in Illinois in digital capabilities. The 50-seat auditorium is regularly used for astronomy classes, sky shows, school programs, and private tours.

As one of the top universities in Christian higher education, Olivet continues to provide Education with a Christian Purpose to all students in every area of study. The introduction of the earth and space science major continues to position Olivet graduates for greater success in any industry that they pursue. The degree is built so that students can gain expertise in science while pursuing a double-major in disciplines such as communications, business administration, political science, and theology.

Olivet Nazarene University is an accredited Christian, liberal arts university offering more than 140 areas of undergraduate and graduate study, including the Doctor of Education in ethical leadership. Olivet's 275-acre park-like main campus is in Bourbonnais, Illinois, 50 miles south of Chicago. Additional sites are in Rolling Meadows and Oak Brook, Illinois; Indianapolis, Indiana; Grand Rapids and Grand Ledge, Michigan; Hong Kong; and more than 100 School of Graduate and Continuing Studies learning locations throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest. From Oxford to Tokyo, hundreds of Olivet students also experience the global classroom each year through study abroad opportunities, internships and worldwide mission trips.
